Beginning Again

I’ve been a user of EagleFiler and SpamSieve for a long time now and I guess my age is acting up on me. You would think that at 79 I should have all the answers… but I don’t. My question has to do with EagleFiler! It all started when I mistakenly moved the finance folder out of the program and couldn’t find it to get it back. So I downloaded from the web my iDrive copy of my files. I thought it would be a simple thing and I’ve been trying to put things back together again for the last month and a half.
I have such a huge mess now with all my files that WERE in great order. But now my memories of even how to get started again aren’t working right. Today I have FIVE windows open in a NEW library and they were all the same. Can you give me a simple answer as to how to start putting my files back where they belong? It seems that I can’t really tell if I’m working in a new library or not. Am I missing something that is supposed to be done in order to get the files started again? When I originally got the program, my memory seems to tell me that the steps for getting started came up automatically (but maybe not). How can I tell what name to give my library and how I am to actually make that name and put it in place. I believe once I get that info, I MAY be able to get started again… and hopefully not have duplicate windows showing up.
Thanks for your help!

Do you mean that you moved the folder using Finder, not EagleFiler?

If you used the File ‣ New Browser Window command to create extra windows for the same library, you can just close the ones that you don’t want.

Where did you move the folder to? Do you see it now?

Did you use File ‣ New Library to tell it to create a new library? Do you see where your library is stored in Finder?

I’m afraid I don’t really understand what you did or where things are at now. Perhaps it would help if you could share some screenshots.

If you launch EagleFiler and have not created library it will show this help page.

It’s not clear to me why you need to make a new library if you already have one. But the name is set when you choose File ‣ New Library.

It will only open one window per library, unless you specifically tell it (each time) to open more.

I mean that somehow when I moved my mouse I must have swiped it across the folder contents and the finance folder disappeared and I couldn’t find it anywhere, not even in the trash.

I didn’t use the command “File - New Browser Window”. I think that some (or probably “a lot of”) the problem is my trying to download from the iDrive online backup program a copy of a segment of my computer files and ended up having about 5 copies that were NOT in any way exactly the way that I had originally made them to be in EF.

I moved the folder to the Documents folder. But some of the files downloaded must have given me copies of the EF files (totally out of order) and then my trying to restore the order and found folders with just a few files instead of all the files that should have been there. Many of those folders contained a yearly “history” and I can just get what I can and discard the rest… if there is a “rest.”

Did you use File ‣ New Library to tell it to create a new library? Do you see where your library is stored in Finder?

Yes, and that helped me get started, but I ran into various issues because of all the duplicated results of my iDrive backups.

I understand what you are saying and I’m trying to give you better answers, but I’m just “stumbling” over all the stuff I’ve created because of the iDrive program. I did finally THINK that I had a major breakthrough and could get EF going. I had my computer running the program all night and most of today, and then started dragging the folders on my desktop into the “Files” folder. But maybe I dragged too many and EF just got hung up on either the import or the scanning of files to remove duplicates. But, EF never quit “importing” after all that time and I did a force quit to stop and was going to try beginning again …and then I got your response, to which I’m responding.

I saw that page and that’s how I got started again, but then it just worked for such a long time that I assumed it had hung up on something. I suppose if I get to that stage again, I should just put a folder into EF and let it work on that till done and then repeat the process till it’s all in there. Should I follow this procedure and try to let the program sort out duplicate files?

aajoyce:

It’s not clear to me why you need to make a new library if you already have one. But the name is set when you choose File ‣ New Library.

I felt like I needed to make a new library in oder to KNOW that I was working with a new library and not with an old copy of a library

I appreciate your help and thank you for your patience in working with me. You’ve already given me encouragement that I can whip this mess into order… if I don’t give up! And I don’t want to give up. As I’ve indicated previously, I’ve used EF for a very long time and have come to rely on it for daily working on various things and it’s been a valuable program for me to have!
Thank you.

Yes, you could set it not to allow duplicate files, and then it will skip them when importing. Turning off the two Spotlight comments features in the settings may help speed it up. If it still gets stuck, please record a sample log.
