Choosing Train as Spam does nothing, makes icon turn yellow

I noticed a spam message in my Apple Mail inbox that SpamSieve (3.3.2b1) had missed, so I selected it and chose Train as Spam. Nothing happened in Mail, and SpamSieve’s icon in the menubar turned a sort of pale yellow. I took samples just in case, then quit SpamSieve; it relaunched automatically and all was well. But I just wanted to report this in case it was useful in some way.

Yes, I would be interested to see the samples. Usually, the icon staying colored means that Mail was not responding, but it’s also possible that there was an issue with SpamSieve’s database.

I’ve attached the samples; I sampled both SpamSieve and the extension (I think that’s what it is). But neither seemed to be doing anything in particular, so they might not be useful. Still, the yellow icon was present while I was taking the samples.

Thanks. It looks like the extension is idle, and the SpamSieve app is waiting on Mail. So it would be good to sample Mail if this happens again.

Thanks, will do.

I happened to see the same “yellowing” behavior a few minutes ago. I had selected ~8 messages and used the Control + Command + S keys. I assume SS takes a while to scan every message and add things to it’s ‘brain’/database, so it take a few seconds to see the messages disappear from the mailbox.

I happened to glance up at the Menu Bar and there was the SS icon in yellow! Never noticed that before. When it had completed it’s tasks, it then reverted to it’s normal color (black & white).

Waited too long to edit my Reply… :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:

I was checking to see how the SS Dock icon acted during a ‘scan’/operation. The Dock icon did not change colors as the Menu Bar does.

When you train a message as spam, the menu bar icon changes to the junk color for the duration of the process. The Dock icon shows a red × badge while SpamSieve itself is processing the message (parsing it, updating its database, etc.) So if you only see the change in the menu bar icon, that likely means that it’s waiting on Mail to download the message data or to move the message to Junk. A sample report from the appropriate app would show what’s causing the delay.

Performed the Activity Monitor capture (I think). SS seems to be working fine but I can forward the “Sample of SpamSieve.txt” if you really want it. :man_shrugging:t2: 2818 lines in BBEdit.

Frankly, I’m not sure I actually captured the ‘mark as Spam’ process. Too much keyboard typing/window clicking/more keyboard typing. Much too fast for my slow, 84 yo eyes. :winking_face_with_tongue:

If you don’t see the × stuck on the SpamSieve Dock icon, the delay is likely in Mail so that’s the app that should be sampled.

Okay, here we go then. Downloaded the new version (3.3.2b2), quit Mail, installed the new version and launched it, launched Mail. Selected a bad mail message and told SS to Filter. Nothing happened and the icon in the menu bar turned pale blue this time. Sampled both SS and Mail. Quit SS; it relaunched automatically and this time it grabbed the bad mail message and treated it as bad. Hope this is more useful:

Thanks. The SpamSieve sample shows that it’s running scripts both to check the TrainSpam mailbox and to do the manual training that you initiated. However, the Mail sample shows that it’s idle. It’s not clear to me whether this is because the scripts were not running at the time of the Mail sample or because the script traffic got dropped on the way to Mail or back from it.

In any case, I think it would make sense to rule out whether this is related to the remote training. Could you uncheck Train messages in TrainSpam and TrainGood for a while and restart Mail and SpamSieve and see whether the problem still occurs?

Sure, no problem. By the way, there was nothing in the TrainSpam mailbox.

In the past when there’s been trouble with the training mailboxes it’s because Mail would get stuck when SpamSieve asked it to create one that was missing in a particular account.

Also, you can click here to enable extra debug logging during the training process to see where the trouble is occurring. (Click here to turn off debug logging.)

OK, clicked, and quit and relaunched SpamSieve. Of course it may take a while for the behavior to recur (if it’s going to).

Did you want me also to turn the drone script back on? I haven’t.

If it doesn’t mess up your workflow too much, I’d like to see if the problem still occurs with the drone script off.

Also, I don’t know whether you’ve already tried the workaround here?

That one (AppleMailMoveToSpecialJunkMailboxForServer) sounds worth trying; ok, done. I notice that that setting is not explained or listed on the Esoteric Preferences page of the Help ( SpamSieve Manual: Settings ); it would be nice if all possible set-via-link preferences were listed there, to help users keep track of what they’re doing.
