Delete before import - or just throw it all in?

Okay, finally trying to make sense of my email mess because I can’t find anything!?!

I have a bunch of different email accounts to finally import into eagle filer.

I’ve read the manual and looked up a bunch of threads. Two quick questions:

  1. Is there a good quick start guide or best practices?
  2. Is there any reason I need to delete and sort before I import? I get that it will take longer if I don’t but I’m assuming it’s easier to sort and filter emails in eagle filer than in traditional mail app.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  1. There’s lots of info about importing mail here.

  2. Do you mean delete messages that don’t actually want to archive/save? And does “sort” mean to organize them into different folders?

Which mail client are you importing from?

I’m importing from Airmail.

My questions, as I think about it more clearly, are:

  1. Looking at the mbox/eml differences/limitations - after I get everything over to eaglefiler - I’d like to eventually have a series of folders for similar emails. My email is not currently in that structure. Is it worthwhile to try and organize before I import? Or is there a particular way to import to make that organization possible?
  2. Is there a way to bring tags over with an import?

Thanks

Importing from Airmail is different from most other mail clients because of its limited export options. There are instructions here.

With Airmail, the messages would always arrive in EagleFiler in .eml format. So you could arrange them into folders in EagleFiler and then later merge them into mailboxes if you want. Or, if it’s easier, you could arrange the messages in Airmail first and then import the folders into EagleFiler.

I’m not aware of a tags feature in Airmail. Do you mean labels? I don’t think it exports these, but you could group the messages by label in Airmail prior to exporting so that they end up grouped together in EagleFiler and then apply the tag after importing.

It’s also possible to enter your mail account information into Apple Mail. It can sync with the same mail server as Airmail, so the mail content would be the same, but it has more options for importing into EagleFiler.

Okay, thanks for the pointers.

I pivoted a bit and decided to import directly from AppleMail.

My issue now is that Eaglefiler doesn’t seem to have grabbed the attachments. It list the attachment names but I can’t open them (unless they are still in Apple Mail in which case it opens the original message).
I read the documentation and I did set Mail to download all attachments.
I didn’t get any errors on import.
My method was to drag messages into an export folder in Apple Mail and then select all and hit F1.
Help, what am I missing.

Update: okay, I think I’m totally confused. How does opening attachments work with Eaglefiler? Does it always open the attachment in Mail?

Sorry, I thought I understood the workflow but it doesn’t seem like I do.
Thanks for helping me clear up my understanding.

The attachments are stored in EagleFiler. If there are images, you can view them inline using View ‣ Message ‣ Use Quick Look. Or you can double-click the message to open it in Apple Mail (using Mail as a viewer for the data that’s in EagleFiler).

You can use Record ‣ Open With or Always Open With to choose a different app if desired.

Thanks so much for the help. Working through import.
Is there a separate setting to make sure that Apple Mail downloads attachments from an exchange server? Or is it the same setting?

Each Mail account has a separate Download Attachments setting, as described here.
