EagleFiler future plans now that Rosetta will be phased out by MacOS28

So, this is a kick in the teeth–I left DT for Eagle Filer, and TIL that it will no longer operate under MacOS28. forehead desk

I do not expect a full schedule–but please let us all know if plans are that Eagle Filer will still be around??

Jenna

When launching EagleFiler on macOS 26.4 or later, macOS may show a “Support Ending for Intel-based Apps” notification. Apple announced to developers in June 2025 that it will continue to support Rosetta 2 until macOS 28 in fall 2027. There’s been no change of plans here; they are just telling users now. We’ve been working on a rewrite of EagleFiler to be fully native on Apple Silicon and expect to finish it long before then.

HOORAY!!! Thank you, and I suspected you already had it all under control. I promise I will not ask again, nor will I jump off the roof or any other self-harming!

Since I am a beta tester I wonder what you mean by “expect to finish it long before then”. Since there isn’t even a beta out yet.

I know you are the only developer so I understand but takes time. But the fact that Apple will drop Rosetta 2 has been known for long.

macOS 28 is something like 17 months away from shipping right now. What I was thinking when I wrote that was not to have it go down to the wire, so to have the release version of EagleFiler out before macOS 28 goes into beta. And so the beta of EagleFiler a month or two before then (private beta, then public beta). It may well be sooner than that, but I don’t want to overpromise because there are always unexpected issues in software development, and Apple may make a change in macOS 27 that breaks one of my other apps, taking development time away for a while.

According to what I’ve read about MacOS 27, it will no longer support Rosetta, which mean that Eagle Filer will not run under it. So, instead of having 15 months to rewrite Eagle Filer, you only have 3! Is that doable for you?

That is not correct. EagleFiler works on the macOS 27 beta, and here’s Apple’s official statement:

Rosetta is currently available for any Mac with Apple silicon, and it will remain available through the forthcoming macOS 27 — the next major macOS release. Starting with computers using macOS 28, Rosetta functionality will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks.

Thanks for clarifying, Michael! I’m glad to hear that Rosetta will still work. Clearly, I misunderstood the situation!

Hi.

Ok that explains this info:

EagleFiler 1.9.20 (released March 16, 2026) is compatible with macOS 10.13 High Sierra through macOS 27 Golden Gate and Apple Silicon Macs”.( my highlighting).

This means that you still need Rosetta, right? Maybe that should be clarified by adding ”when running Rosetta2”?

Questions:

1. I know you have a lot of apps that need updating. Where in the pipeline du you see Eaglefiler? A PB within two months? Three?

  1. I realise this new Universal version will be a new purchase. Do you have any idea of the price? Will current owners of a license get a discout?

It does need Rosetta, but the point of that statement was just to answer the question of whether the app is compatible. If you don’t already have Rosetta installed, macOS will automatically offer to install it for you, as needed. More details and the most up-to-date information are always on the support page.

So far, it does not look like a lot of compatibility work will be needed for macOS 27. I have some 0.0.1 updates for SpamSieve and ToothFairy in the works, but other than that the main focus will be EagleFiler. It’s probably better not to get into announcing projected release dates.

I expect to keep the same license model (no subscription) with approximately the same price (perhaps a small increase, TBD). Current owners will get a 50% discount.

That all sounds reasonable. Great that you stay off the subscription trial.

Looking forward to betatesting your 2.x version when you need betatesters.
