Gmail messages moved to spam folder show up in the inbox as lightly colored ghost messages which can be deleted. My other accounts work properly.

This might be because you have View ‣ Show Deleted Messages selected in Mail. If so, you could just set it to hide them instead.
Sometimes Gmail will mark messages as deleted but not expunge them right away, and that’s when messages show up as gray. It may also help to adjust the Gmail settings as described here.
