Is there a mbox file extension?

I am archiving my mail in Eaglefiler. All the messages are in mbox format but the mbox files have no extension. Why is this?

I like file extensions because then I immediately know what it is.

You can certainly add .mbox to the filename if you want. EagleFiler does not do this by default because it’s not needed and because macOS uses the .mbox extension for an entirely different purpose, which can lead to it displaying the file as a folder.
