Most spammed mail gets marked as read but Gmail from one site ends up in Junk but shows up as unread. This is a really odd-ball thing and I don’t know what to do about it.
This is probably because it’s being moved by a server filter, not SpamSieve. Please see this page.
To the best of my knowledge I have no server filters on Gmail or Apple mail other than Spamsieve. On top of that it is a single source – abdienhearing.com. It goes into Junk without any color, which suggests it isn’t going thru Spamsieve. The address is blocked but I don’t have blocked mail turned on. I’ll try that.
Gmail does have its own spam filter. The solution is to turn it off or to set up SpamSieve to refilter those messages, as recommended on the page that I mentioned above.
I recommend turning off Apple Mail’s blocked mail filter, though that wouldn’t be the cause of this issue because Mail’s filter ignores messages that Gmail already moved to Junk.
I turned Apple mail blocking back to off. However, is there any sense to blocking mail if nothing is done with it? I assumed blocking just meant it would not be accepted but I actually have no idea what happens to it.
I’m pretty sure I have all filtering off in Gmail. This is what it looks like. Am I missing something?
The Apple Mail blocking feature moves the messages to the Junk mailbox.
Yes, there is no visible setting to turn off the Gmail spam filter. You have to specifically create a filter to do that.
Really great instructions for creating that filter! Thanks for explaining how to do that; I had no idea. This might explain some emails that I never received (several years ago now).
