I bought SpamSieve over a decade ago and have stayed up to date since. Times have changed, however, and needs change too.
When I first adopted it, running a drone server made sense. Desktops and home and office servers were commonplace. Mobile devices were not as pervasive in daily life. Today, the landscape for me (and I’m fairly sure for the majority of your base) has changed a lot.
I switched to using laptops primarily. There is virtually no need left to run a server 24/7 in one’s home or office any more. Certainly not MacOS. Any 24/7 platform in an office setting is far more likely to be linux/unix/pc than even back then when MacOS market share was lower. The only ones left running MacOS servers are primarily hobbyists, or maybe someone trying to do ai or bitcoin.
The rest of the Apple market share has drifted heavily into iCloud-based living. We have Apple One subscriptions. We live on our iPhones most of the day until we have time to do “heavier” work on our newly far more capable iPads or MacBook Airs and Pros. A lot of us even perform our jobs using specialized/professional apps on our phones during much of the day. We take our laptops everywhere with us—because one never knows when one will actually need to use it for something heavy. But we also favor getting stuff done on mobile whenever possible. iCloud lets us live on both at any time we want. There’s virtually nothing we can’t access and manage from our phones now.
At the same time, most of us have many more email accounts than ever. A work address. A gmail account. A personal account. Special accounts we have to monitor or manage for our enterprises or side hustles (like sales vs support vs billing vs social). These will span various services. iCloud, Gmail, and many more, including our own private IMAP servers.
Apple Mail is not perfect but I have not found an alternative that lets me check all email in one inbox, running as a native app, integrated with the OS and that is in perfect sync across all device… and that has anything better over it that justifies paying for a new app/service. So I stay on Apple Mail.
Against this backdrop, I request a huge (paid, obviously) upgrade to SpamSieve that integrates robust rules and spam filtering across all connected devices. Utilize iCloud for your backend. That’s where all the training, rules, lists, etc, should live. Give us iOS versions of the app in addition to the MacOS. Target Apple Mail first for this upgrade, if you need to focus on a single product. Because a single solution like this, paired with Apple Mail, would solve an enormous array of email challenges for all Apple ecosystem denizens. Enough to motivate many to stick by Apple Mail instead of using alternatives. (IMNSHO).
I can elaborate on the myriad issues regarding rules and spam across multiple accounts and devices that I run into with things as they are, currently, if that helps. Suffice to say that everything is chaotic and any solution for spam or rules that I try to implement invariably is at odds with other rules.
I really need an assistant level service to go into my inbox and spam folders and take care of A LOT of sub-categorization, soft-deleting, hard-deleting, flagging, archiving, bouncing, unsubscribing, auto-replying, etc, etc.
Your product, believe it or not, is the closest thing I’ve seen to anything that could handle all of that.
