I select my Gmail inbox, and then, when I click on filter now, nothing happens.
There is no entry in the log that I can see that indicates anything at all happened. It would really help if I could filter an inbox and get rid of all the already trained spam that had previously arrived and is sitting there unread. Please help.

It is not necessary to select the inbox in Select Mailboxes to Filter if you have Check inboxes for new messages not sent to Mail extension selected. Do you have filtering enabled in the Setup tab of SpamSieve’s settings? If so, it should be filtering automatically, without the need to click Filter Now.
If it’s enabled but nothing seems to be happening, you can enable additional diagnostics by clicking this link. They will then show up via Help ‣ Open Error Log or if you use the Save Diagnostic Report command in the Help menu and send us the report file, as described here.

It seems to be saying that it is checking your Gmail inbox, but that it’s not finding any new messages there to filter. This could be because the messages are not marked as unread or because they were received before the time when you first used or activated the Check inboxes for new messages not sent to Mail extension feature.

I would really like to get to the bottom of it and get it working better as so far I am still going to be required to do a lot of deleting and so forth which is exactly what I’m trying to avoid, spending hours each week deleting spam.

Under Apple mail > Settings > Extensions, SpamSieve extension was NOT checked; I’ve checked now per some well-hidden instructions I found.

Yes, it should usually be enabled. I’m not sure what you mean by “well-hidden”—it’s right in the setup instructions.
