SpamSieve 3.3 Cannot load Apple Mail window when replying to messages

I just upgraded to SpamSieve 3.3, and I’m using MacOS 26.5 beta 5.

When I try to reply to a message in Apple Mail, the window that normally displays the text of the message to which I’m replying is empty. If I close the message, a warning message is displayed that reads “Unable to Load Window” as the title, and “This window could not be loaded at this time. Are you sure you want to close it?” as the text of the message. If I choose “Yes”, then it sometimes happens that the window where my messages are displayed is now empty even as I simply try to view them in the Preview window. Also, closing Mail now takes much longer than it did prior to the update. Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

Are you sure? The latest beta I’m seeing is 26.5 beta 2.

I doubt this is related to the SpamSieve 3.3 update—the Mail extension code didn’t change and SpamSieve doesn’t do anything with Mail’s windows, anyway—but you could try going back to 3.2.2 and see whether that makes a difference.

How long does it take? You could record a sample from Mail during the quit to see what it’s doing.

You’re correct about the beta. It’s beta 2 and not beta 5. I had 26.5 in my mind and just carried over the 5.

To downgrade to 3.2.2, do I need to first uninstall 3.3? I downloaded 3.2.2 and told it to replace 3.3, but when I check the version, it still says 3.3. I don’t want to lose the spam training that’s been done, so I want to be sure I correctly try the downgrade.

I’ll have to record a sample of how long it takes Mail to close. I used Force Quit a couple of times because it seemed to hang.

Maybe the problem is on Apple’s side. Downgrading to 3.2.2 seems like a good test.

No, you can just quit and replace the old app file. Where are you still seeing “3.3”?

I was not able to reproduce the reply window problem on 26.5b2. Mail does take a while to quit—it seems to be finalizing something with the IMAP server—and this happens regardless of whether SpamSieve is installed.

I still see 3.3 under “SpamSieve” (Top-left of screen next to the Apple logo when SpamSieve is the active application)→”About SpamSieve”. When I downloaded 3.2.2 (I confirmed this version as the installation window that lets me drag it to the Application folder says 3.2.2), then chose to replace the existing application (vs keep both) when prompted.

I just tried it again to be sure I did it correctly and got the same result.

It sounds like the file didn’t get replaced, for whatever reason. I suggest that you quit both Mail and SpamSieve and drag the old version to the trash before copying the new one into place.

I did just as you suggested (quit both Mail and SpamSieve, dragged the app from the Applications folder to the trash, then installed 3.2.2) and it still says version 3.3 is installed. Very odd.

I can’t imagine why it might make a difference, but I’ll try dragging SpamSieve to the trash, rebooting, then reinstalling.

  1. It turns out SpamSieve was installed in both my Applications folder and my Applications/Utilities folder. The version in the Utilities folder was the one being used. I’m not sure why it was in two locations, but I corrected this.
  2. When I rebooted without SpamSieve installed, Mail exhibited the same behavior of displaying the empty window. I know SpamSieve’s update isn’t the culprit.
  3. The problem is an issue with Apple’s latest beta release.

Thanks for all of your help!
