SpamSieve not recognizing Viagra spam email

Hi everyone!

I’ve been using SpamSieve for several years now, and it’s a great program - perhaps THE best I’ve used on the Mac!

Lately, however, I’ve noticed that SpamSieve simply refuses to recognize a lot of Viagra-related junk messages. I use the “SpamSieve - Train Spam” script on the messages, and the individual message gets moved to my Junk Mail folder that one time. Unfortunately, however, similarly-titled messages don’t get recognized as junk mail at all - in almost all cases, the word “VIAGRA” is correctly written in the Subject field, so I can’t understand why SpamSieve can’t properly recognize and handle these messages.

Does anyone know what I can do to get SpamSieve to recognize and properly handle these messages? I’m recently updated to the most current version, but the update has not resolved and/or improved upon this particular problem.

Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Pietro

This is probably because of your address book settings. Please see the How do I make SpamSieve catch spams sent from my own address? page.

Hi Michael!

Thanks for the prompt reply! I always check the option to exclude my address, and although I don’t use Address Book very much, my email address is included as the Me address.

The messages I referred to don’t appear as having been sent from me, though - they’re always sent from unique addresses, ie. from kelly@somebogusaddress.com.

What’s odd is that SpamSieve fails to properly recognize ANY of these messages, regardless of whether or not I try to train SpamSieve to recognize these messages as spam.

Any thoughts?

Bye for now!

Pietro

OK, then please see the Why is SpamSieve not catching my spam? page to check your setup and/or send in a report.

having same issues
Michael, I’ve been a subscriber for years and am having the same issues. I’ve tried everything. SpamSieve used to work perfectly, then this past year I got the annoying Viagra messages from my address. A couple of weeks ago I finally got it to recognize my address in my me card (after updating - never worked before). So, what has happened now is they are coming through on one of my other email accounts. All of my addresses are listed on my me card, so I don’t get it. I’ve gone back through all of the instructions and I’m doing everything right. What’s really weird is I actually received a virus email earlier today that didn’t get caught. It showed it was from amazon but wasn’t to/from any of my addresses. I’ve never gotten one of those before. Wished I’d saved it for you, but it wasn’t until another spam came through today that I finally got really bothered about it. Nothing has changed lately on my system except for updating to 2.8.1. (I also had to sign back up to the forums because your system wouldn’t recognize my userid or email address and it also said I was typing in the wrong words - and I didn’t have caps set in case you wonder that). Thanks so much for your help. Love this software overall. Really I do…

Please see the What information should I include when I report a problem? page and e-mail me your log file, the false negatives files, and screenshots showing that you have everything setup correctly in your mail program.

I’m having the same experience. I’ve been using SpamSeive for a long time very successfully, but starting with the 2.8.1 upgrade I’ve been flooded with sex-pill spam, usually containing a message embedded in some kind of image. I increased the sensitivity, which seemed to help a little, but the program started to filter good mail as well as spam, requiring me to review the spam box periodically, which is a pain in the neck. Help!

Then please follow the same suggestions that I made earlier in the thread.

A sudden change usually means that something isn’t setup properly. Therefore, there’s probably no need to increase the sensitivity.

Thanks for sending the screenshots and log. The problem seems to be with your address book settings. Please follow the instructions on the How do I make SpamSieve catch spams sent from my own address? page.
